The data obtained confirmed that the adverse effect of cigarette smoking on health can be significantly reduced in smokers who completely switch to using a tobacco heating system. So, they reduce the impact of toxic substances compared to continuing smoking, and cause significantly less harm to their body. And in terms of biomarkers of potential harm, switching to heating systems can be comparable to quitting smoking.
The adverse effect of cigarette smoking on health can be significantly reduced in smokers who completely switch to using a tobacco heating system.
Most of the assessed BPV
(which correlate with the risk of developing diseases and are therefore considered indicators of changes in smoking-related harm) reached levels similar to complete cessation of smoking, while the decline was rapid and steady over a 6-month period. That is, the transition to tobacco heating systems can potentially contribute to reducing the number of diseases caused by smoking, various types of cancer. At the same time, unfavorable trends were found in those who continue to smoke.
The obtained data on BPV and BV strongly indicate that the tobacco heating system is a tobacco product with reduced exposure compared to cigarette smoking, therefore, the negative impact of cigarette smoking on health can be reduced by completely switching to the use of tobacco heating systems*.
The positive conclusion of the study was given by the authorized body for medical research of the National Health Service of Great Britain (NHS), the Research Ethics Committee of Wales (registration number 17/WA/0212).
Thus, the results of the study confirm that the transition to tobacco heating systems can help reduce the harm from smoking if a person cannot give up the habit, moreover, it can be the first step to gradually quit smoking.
